How to avoid snow mold in Fountain Valley?

How do you identify snow mold?

Symptoms first appear in the lawn as a series of circles that can range from 3 to 12 inches in diameter. These matted, brownish colored patches start to appear as the snow melts in the spring and will keep growing as long as the ground stays cold and wet.

Snow mold is a common issue in Colorado during late winter, causing patches of discolored grass that may not recover until warmer weather arrives in summer or fall, and sometimes it may never recover at all.

To prevent snow mold, there are several steps you can take to maintain a healthy lawn throughout the winter.

#1 - Dethatch, also known as Power Raking

One effective method is to dethatch your lawn using a thatch rake or power rake. This should be done one to two times a year during the active growing periods in early spring and fall.

#2 - Remove Yard Waste and Debris

Another important step is to rake up fallen leaves before they become soggy and decompose on the lawn, as this can create an ideal environment for mold growth.

#3 - Avoid Pile-Ups

Avoid piling snow in one place when shoveling your driveway and sidewalks, as large piles of snow can lead to slower melting and increased moisture in the soil, which promotes snow mold development.

#4 - Let Nature Happen

It is also recommended to refrain from fertilizing your lawn within six weeks of the first snowfall, as this allows the grass to become dry and less susceptible to snow mold growth.

#5 - Fill The Void

Lastly, keep an eye on low spots in your lawn that tend to hold water after heavy rain, as these areas are prone to snow mold. Fill in these spots with dirt to prevent water accumulation and the formation of puddles.

~Things To Consider....

Snow mold is dormant during the warmer months, so it is best to take preventative steps at the end of the summer. Healthy lawn maintenance including routine mowing, leaf raking, and a proper fertilization program will keep you one step ahead of this disease.
